An Investigation Into Aristotelian Functionalism - 1751 Words

An Investigation into Supposed Aristotelian Functionalism In recent years, modern functionalists have taken to claiming Aristotle as one of their own or at the least a great grandfather of sorts. This essay will investigate the extent to which Aristotle was a functionalist, and once this question is resolved, we will evaluate to what degree his view reliably accounts for a valid philosophy of mind. Before we can explore the degree to which Aristotle’s philosophy aligns with that of modern functionalists, we must first account for the philosophy of modern functionalism. Principally, functionalists believe that mental states (e.g., beliefs, desires, feeling pain) are solely constituted by their function. This is their solution to the â€Å"mind/body problem†. Cartesian dualists claimed that a special mental substance (distinct from the body) is where the ultimate nature of the mental resides. Physicalists ( descendants of the materialists) equate mental states with brain states. On the other hand, functionalists assert that the mental states causal relations to one and other and to sensory inputs and behavioral outputs constitute these mental states. Some functionalists, often called computational functionalists, go as far as to say that these internal states operate in the same way as a computer program. `` Wicked Games `` By Abel Tesfaye - 1566 Words

In the current era of popular music in America, childhood starlets often experience a shift or change in the genre and lyrical contents of the music they produce once they reach adulthood. While childhood stars such as Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears transformed their images towards more sexually and culturally liberal ones, African American artists, on the other hand, have to contend with toning down their music explicitly to appeal more towards white America. This essay will focus entirely on the Ethiopian artist Abel Tesfaye (also known by his stage-name â€Å"The Weeknd†) and the evolution his music endured as it struggled to appeal more towards white mainstream America. Tesfaye’s departure from his drug/sex ridden references in his previous works in order to dilute his music to appeal to a wider more age friendly audience resulted in the loss of his cultural and social background, as his identity shifted to match his new pop persona. In one of Tesfaye’s earl y songs, titled â€Å"Wicked Games,† he describes a drug and depression filled love story with heavy sexual undertones coupled with emotional scarring. He sings, â€Å"Bring your love, baby, I could bring my shame / Bring the drugs, baby, I could bring my pain / I got my heart right here / I got my scars right here† (The Weeknd 9-10). This song, along with a majority of his early mixtapes, encompasses the struggles he endured as an artist battling drug abuse and emotional trauma. He states in an interview, â€Å"I didn’t have a fatherShow MoreRelatedAnalysis Of The Song Wicked Games1697 Words   |  7 Pagesto them not having as many expectations or requirements to be able to join it as women do. We will write a custom essay sample on Season and Scientific Aspect or any similar topic only for you Order Now during the period of season change human body is more prone to external infections than rest of the year. Also praying to â€Å"shakti†, the power or energy which is source of all the actions and is best represented by solar influences is not only part of Hinduism but every religion believes in it. So this exercise of fasting, for me, is to maintain both physical and mental balance during climate change. The rules of Navratri clearly say that, we should not consume meat, alcohol, grains and regular salt. I always take enough calories which can keep me going all day, so I don’t feel any difference from other days. There come few moments of weaknesses when I can feel that my stomach is empty and I can’t have anything to eat (because I don’t have access to kitchenL) and when I want to eat something â€Å"chatpata† and again I can’t have it(because I am not allowed to L) . Most difficult of all is 8th day when it seems impossible to go on anymore and that too in a place where everyone else can eat pizza and chili potato. The people around you also affect a lot about how you feel in these days. It’s a lot easier to keep fast when I am at home. In a nutshell, 9 days of navratri are more about self control. The human body is detoxified due to this practice. In the end when it is over I can feel significant changes, I feel good because it becomes easier to avoid unhealthy meals. Basically this exercise is effective in long term. How to cite Season and Scientific Aspect, Papers
